Lexi, Nitro and I are excited to participate in this week's Saturday Pet Blogger Hop. Special thanks goes out to our Blog Hop hosts, Life With Dogs, Two Little Cavaliers and Confessions of the Plume
What an exciting week it has been for the Lee household! Especially my deaf white boxer pup Nitro.
On Tuesday morning Nitro and I had the pleasure of meeting Jean Jadhon with WDBJ 7 News (Nitro's Story) here in Roanoke. We had rescheduled taping a story for the local news about my dog Nitro at least three times because of bad weather. Right when the weather finally started improving, the taping got pushed back once again because Nitro broke his toe. It took us another six weeks to finally get together with Jean to shoot a segment about Nitro. Nitro was such a good boy and he loved Jean and the camera man! After he showed off and did all of his commands, I took Nitro off his leash in the training room at Field Of Dreams Dog Training Center so he could run wild. Sure enough he got that crazy look in his eye and he began to stalk the camera man! We all had a great time.
Jean Jadhon with WDBJ Channel 7 wanted to do a story on Nitro because he is deaf and he is being trained through ASL sign language for his command signals. Not only has Nitro had to learn the signs, but I also have had to study and learn them as well. I found this great resource on-line called aslpro.com All I have to do is go to the site, click on the dictionary tab, click on the word I want to learn, and then there appears a very short video showing me how to sign that particular word. I think Nitro gets the ASL signs faster then I do. He is a very quick study. Anyway, we had a blast and Jean (and her camera man) did a great job. Here is the link to the news story:
WDBJ 7 News - Deaf puppy rescured in Salem is now learning new tricks
On Friday morning April 8th we will be meeting Meg from The Salem Times Register at The Salem Animal Shelter and the new Salem Dog Park to do another interview. We are looking forward to a group photo with all our friends at the Salem Animal Shelter. Wish us luck!
Update on Nitro: We had a two hour interview with the Salem Times Register and when we got home we got to enjoy the wonderful story on Life With Dogs (thanks Neil!). So all of these great things happened today and Nitro and I are very excited to get the word out that deaf dogs are good dogs! Well it that wasn't enought, then we went over to abc news and there we were again. Thank you abc news for featuring my very special dog! According to my dog Lexi, she is wondering what all the fuss is about ;o)
My name is Christina and this is what started out to be my dog/horse blog named after my dog Lexi. Slowly my blog has morphed into a dog/life/farm blog. I love to take photos of everything relating to the farm and local events. I am also a Design Junkie and love to take my old run down ranch and redesign every inch into my dream retreat. You are a celebrity, Nitro! What a great interview you gave the news lady. We always love to read about how wonderful you are doing. You mom is a saint!

Minnie and Mack
We get the fuss - and are so happy that he is in good hands! Thanks for sharing him, he makes a terrific ambassador for deaf dogs. :)
ReplyDeleteYay Nitro!!! Nice to see special needs doggies showcased! He is a stunning dog as well! xoxoxo to all!
ReplyDeleteI HAD to come over and visit when I saw your story on Life With Dogs! I didn't know you had adopted a new puppy! Nitro is adorable. I know it's not the same, but I can completely relate to that overwhelmed feeling and thinking "What have I done?" when I brought my Daisy home too. It al worked out fine for us and as I see it's working out great for you and Nitro too. He's a lucky boy.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I laughed when I saw Nitro zooming around the training room. Boxer puppies are so fun to watch when they get silly like that.
Congrats to you and Nitro! Maybe all the media exposure will help people to understand that deaf dogs are adoptable and trainable. It would be wonderful news if other deaf animals were placed as a result of your hard work and dedication!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the story.
ReplyDeleteNitro is absolutely gorgeous.
Absolutely! Our agility group has an English Sheepdog that is deaf, and training for agility. He is proving to be quite good, as he has no noise distraction problem. What an interesting way to improve on a dog's performance when you've removed one of the obstacles to success!
ReplyDeleteNext weekend while I'm playing on this hop, I'll also be hosting one at my blog. I'd love to have you join in to help homeless bunny friends find furever homes. Check it out http://www.allthingsdogblog.com/2011/04/easter-rabbit-adoptathon-blog-hop.html
Hi Nitro. Your ooman certainly does take bootiful pictures. I enjoyed meeting you.

ReplyDeleteAnd, I'm excited you are in Roanoke. My aunt and uncle live on a farm there, and it's such a nice place.
I'm so excited for you guys! I hope the rain isn't putting too much of a damper on your weekend. xo
